my older shar-pei/neo mastiff mix has a tumor on the back of her right front leg. the once vet that we've seen has told us that it's probably cancer and removing it might make it worse and probablly wouldn't help. any advice on what we should do? | |
my choice is to have the tumor removed asap. what we're taking her to another vet today for a second opinion on it. she's at least 10 years old (i got her from the shelter), so we aren't positive on her age.

you can get the lump aspirated to get a sample (fine needle aspirate). occasionally the sample quality isn't good enough for cytology to get a diagnosis but usually it's fine.
if it's slow growing and benign you could leave it. if rapidly growing, or expected to metastasize go for removal. removal of large tumours from limbs can be technically challenging depending on tumour type and exact site.
if the dog is eldery consider pre-anaesthetic blood sampling to check for problems that may affect the anaesthetic (such as kidney insufficiency).
